Frequently Asked Questions about Mouthguards

What protection does a mouthguard offer?

Mouthguards fit over all the upper jaw teeth. Mouthguards cushion a blow to the face or jaws significantly reducing the risk of broken teeth, fractures of the jaw bones, concussion and soft-tissue injuries.

A properly fitted mouthguard will stay in place while you are wearing it, making it easy for you to talk and breathe.

I have orthodontic braces on. Can I have a custom fitted mouthguard?

Yes! We make your mouthguard to fit over your braces. It’s very important to have a custom fitted mouthguard to protect the soft tissue inside your mouth from the orthodontic wires and brackets.

How is a mouthguard made?

Custom-fitted mouthguards are made by dentists. A mouthguard is made on a model made from impressions of your teeth. They do cost more than shop bought mouthguards, but because they are customized they provide a much better fit and much greater protection. There are a variety of custom-fitted mouthguards available, designed specifically for each particular sport or activity.

How many appointments are required to get a mouthguard?

While some dentists make only one appointment, to take the impression for the mouthguard, with the finished mouthguard simply being handed to the player, we make a second appointment at which the mouthguard is adjusted in the player’s mouth. At this appointment, the mouthguard is adjusted to precisely fit against the lower teeth as well, to ensure the optimal comfort and protection from the mouthguard.

How long does it take to get my custom fitted mouthguard?

Our custom fitted mouthguards are made on our premises, which allows for a faster turn around time for the fitting appointment. We can usually have your mouthguard ready within a day or two of the impression appointment. During the lead up to the winter season, turn around will be at least a week.

What colours are available?

Custom fitted mouthguards are available in a range of colours and we can make your mouthguard in two colours of your choice (at a small additional fee). Your mouthguard also comes with a protective case.

Do the mouthguards have player’s identification details?

All mouthguards we make are double-laminated (some are even triple-laminated) which enables us to embed lables in your mouthguard, with your name and phone number securely sandwiched between the coloured layer and the outer, clear layer.

How does one take care of a mouthguard?

  • Clean your mouthguard every time you use it by washing it with soap and warm (never hot) water.
  • At least once a month, soak your mouthguard in denture-cleaning solution.
  • Don’t bend your mouthguard when storing.
  • Protect the mouthguard from high temperatures – such as hot water, hot surfaces, or direct sunlight – to minimize distorting its shape.
  • Occasionally check the mouthguard for general wear. If you find holes or tears in it or if it becomes loose or causes discomfort, it needs to be replaced.
  • Never try to adjust the mouthguard yourself.
  • Bring the mouthguard to each regularly scheduled dental visit to have your dentist check it.
